Audio/Video Protocol Handbook: Broadcast Standards and Reference Data
Jerry C Whitaker, ed.
McGraw-Hill, 2002
This is not a standard "how to" text, but rather a master cross reference with descriptions of all major standards used in broadcast including those by SMPTE, ATSC, SCTE. Extremely useful in finding that missing piece of information.

Now very dated, but still useful text. Particularly good sections on interface design and typography.

Digital Content Management

NAB Research and Planning Dept., 2001
An excellent overview of an increasingly important subject in ITV. Includes one of the more cogent discussions of Metadata we have encountered.

Digital TV Over Broadband: Harvesting Bandwidth
Joan Van Tassel
Focal Press / Butterworth-Heinemann, 2001
A good and, it must be said, exhaustive overview of DTV, ITV and the Internet. Large amounts of useful information outweigh its occasional lapses into post modernism.

Gerrard O'Driscoll
Prentice Hall, 2000
Contains a great deal of useful information but somewhat Euro-centric and poorly organized.

A useful source book of every player in the ITV field. Regularly updated at www.itvdictionary.com.

Interactive Television Demystified
Jerry Whitaker

Interesting discussion of ITV topics, primarily in digital systems. Seems to be directed at the MIS crowd. Regular updates at www.tvhandbook.com.

Interactive TV, Technology and Markets
Hari Om Srivastava
Artech House, 2002
A well researched and organized description of technical and business issues in interactive television with exhaustive notes and references that are alone worth the price. Also gets the award for most use of the word "bouquet" in a technical text. Recommended.

Interactive Television, TV Of The Future or The Future Of TV
Jens F Jensen and Cathy Toscan
Aalborg University Press, 1999
A collection of essays on Interactive television. Some useful historical, user experience and business information, but occasionally veers towards the crit lit crowd.

Modern Cable Television Technology
Ciciora, Farmer, Large
Morgan Kaufman, 2000
An in depth and highly technical (get out the slide rules folks!) overview of cable television systems. While not of use to the casual developer, a useful reference for the more hard core technician.

A good if slightly dated overview of new media technologies from a broadcasting business perspective.

Open Cable Architecture

In-depth discussion of the new OpenCable standard currently under discussion in the industry.

Producing Interactive Television
Annesa Hartman
Charles River Media, 2002
A reasonably complete overview of creating interactive television, however it suffers from an annoyingly conversational tone ("There is a hilarious Saturday Night Live skit that epitomizes." (p. 97)), and contains much that is dated and/or inaccurate. Nice color pictures.

TV dot Com
Phillip Swann
TV Books LLC, 2000
While somewhat dated, the influence of this book has been so wide that upon reading it you will note that large amounts of what is now conventional wisdom in the industry appeared here first. Nonetheless, it must be noted that this was written before either the tech stock crash of 2000, so some of the predictions must be taken with a grain of salt.
