The Program and Systems Information Protocal (PSIP) is the ATSC standard for digital television channel naming, numbering and navigation. DTV Receivers use PSIP information to tune and label digital and analog channels.
See pictures from of a variety of set-top
boxes and instructions for properly implementing PSIP.

SERVES
-
All DTV receivers. No Digital Cable set-top-boxes.
DTV PSIP has no effect on digital cable systems choosing to carry DTV
broadcasts. Cable set-tops ignore DTV PSIP and instead use a separate
navigation system.
INGREDIENTS
-
1 - PSIP Generator
2 - Multiplexor
Choose Upstream or Downstream. Upstream uses the Multiplexor that is part
of the encoding system. Downstream uses an additional multiplexor downstream
from the encoding multiplexor. (See drawing below.)
3 - PSIP Generator/Mux Interface
Choose UDP-Ethernet or ASI: UDP is a less-expensive interface. Some
multiplexors require ASI.
4 - Data for Each Transmitter
Transport Stream Identifier (TSID): This is a unique code assigned by MSTV for every digital and analog transmitter. It helps a receiver to differentiate between stations when the frequency is changed by a cable system or translator.
RF Carrier Frequency: Be careful - some PSIP systems ask you to enter the frequency of the lower band edge, others the DTV pilot and some the center of the band.
5 - Data for Each Program Service
Major Channel Number: Usually chosen for all services to be the same as the
analog channel number.
Minor Channel Number: An analog transmitter has one video/audio program
service with a minor number of 0. A digital transmitter can have multiple
program services with minor numbers from 1 to 99. Each service has any number
of audio channels, with or without video.
Service Short Name: This is the channel name shown to viewers when they surf or view an Electronic Program Guide. It must be seven characters or less. Some receivers show fewer than seven characters in certain modes. Logically, this name should match the "brand" used to promote the channel.
Service Description: Longer description of program service, up to 255
characters. Only available on some receivers.
INSTRUCTIONS
-
1 - Install
Install equipment and interfaces.
2 - Configure
Enter data gathered above into relevant tables.
3 - Test
Test your transmission on a wide variety of receivers. Submit your stream
for independent testing. It is easy to set a PSIP system so that some
receivers work, while others do not.
